Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Lee.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was raised in Maryland by an artist and an entrepreneur. I think seeing the value of vision and acumen is where it all started for me. Experiences and education have always been the most valuable things in my life. I was excited to be the first in my family to attend college and I just kept going to more and more school!
My favorite subjects were physiology and biomechanics. Now as a physical therapist, I try to identify movement dysfunctions in order to improve pain. Pain science is a multifaceted and complex concept. It is the most interesting part of my job and challenges me every day. In order to have a shot at treating someone in pain, you really have to get to know your patient.
If you’ve ever been a patient, you’ve probably experienced a rushed interaction at some point. Insurance companies keep charging higher premiums to patients and reimbursing less to providers every year. We are now at a point where it’s becoming more cost-effective for many outpatient providers to work outside of the insurance model. When it comes to evaluating and treating the causes of pain, there really isn’t an effective way to rush that process. Physical therapy is as much of an art as it is a science and art takes time.
This is what drove me to open Savannah Spine and TMJ Therapy. I offer one on one physical therapy and wellness programs out of my home office in a quiet and relaxed setting. Appointments are only on weekends to cater to the busy working professional that is looking for something different This allows me to spend the time necessary to provide hands-on services like joint mobilization and myofascial release.
While some clients see small benefits and some see vast changes, they all get the attention and care they deserve. It is truly a labor of love for my community and the best way I can think of to use my skills to give back. We will all be patients at some point and deserve access to this type of care. This is rehab reimagined.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are always challenges when it comes to starting a business. Since I just opened this summer, I’m very much still in the weeds of it all.
I want to keep the relaxed atmosphere and personal touch of my little home office while still portraying the level of professionalism and skill I provide. I plan to remain fully dedicated to my weekday position and juggle this business as weekend appointments only.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Savannah Spine provides physical therapy and wellness services to decrease pain and improve function/ performance. I am a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy and received my fellowship training through the Spinal Manipulation Institute. This is how I came to specialize in manual treatments for spine and temporomandibular joint disorders.
The recent increase in employees working from home has only increased the need for conservative ways to treat neck and back pain. In addition to working from home, the pandemic has increased stress on family roles, finances, and relationships. Stress has a huge impact on our health. Clenching and grinding associated with stress or a variety of other factors can lead to headaches, jaw pain, or clicking. Improving jaw range of motion can ease the pain interfering with eating and talking.
Every session is a personalized, one-on-one experience. The focus of treatment is on manual therapy and joint mobilization. This hands-on approach is the essence of the brand.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love how friendly and supportive our community is. Savannah is not only welcoming to visitors but prioritizes support for local businesses. Local initiatives range from homeless outreach to rallying for human rights. Our city also goes to great lengths to preserve/ restore our historic buildings and conserve our natural resources.
Savannah is truly the hostess city that welcomes all people. Every community has struggles and battles with gun violence, drugs, and affordable housing. We can always strive to do better to lift up our fellow humans.
